Governor's Support Our
Students |
| A Statewide
after school care program serving, Toisnot
Middle, Forrest Hills Middle, Vick Elementary,
and Barnes Elementary in Wilson NC. Funded
by the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention. |
In 1994, NC
Governor James Hunt recognized a need to improve
efforts to reduce juvenile crime. Statistics
provided that adolescents were most likely to
participate in harmful situations between
the hours of 3-6 p.m., when they were out of
school and unsupervised. Support Our Students
was developed to address this need. The
Support Our
Students (SOS)
Program is a community based after-school
initiative that provides support and guidance to
young people by involving them in constructive
activities to keep them focused and out of
trouble.

Governor's One-on-One |
|
A
statewide mentoring initiative
Serving Wayne County with two
full-time programs. Funded
by the N.C. Department of
Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention. |
|
The
Governor’s One-on-One Volunteer
Program is a statewide
initiative that Governor James
B. Hunt began in 1982 to promote
the development of adult
volunteer programs. In these
programs, troubled young people
(court involved and "at-risk"
youth) are matched with adult
volunteers who are willing to
give their time, energy, and
compassion so that young lives
can be redirected.
The role of the
volunteer is that of a friend
and role model for the youth.
The volunteer and youth work on
a one-on-one basis, meeting
approximately four hours each
week for one year. Volunteers
are carefully screened, trained,
and supervised. Through
developing friendships with
youths, volunteers impact
positively on every aspect of
the children’s social,
emotional, intellectual, and
physical lives.
